Course outcome.
By the end of the course, you’ll understand all the basics of how to perform sound design for EDM and modern commercial music.
This course is designed for experienced music producers. If you are unsure you have the required level of knowledge, then speak with us, and we will be able to advise.
This course has a level 1 and 2. We recommend taking level one if you have five or less years of experience in music production.
You will require a computer (PC or Mac), a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW), an audio interface and headphones or monitor speakers. You can use the processors and effects that come free with your DAW, but depending on your DAW, you may need to invest in some software synthesisers and further plug-ins. If you need further advice on this, use the contact page to talk to us before applying.

Music Theory
This first module introduces the basic skillsets and requirements for producing electronic dance music. You’ll learn about Keys and chords and how modern music relates to traditional music theory.
By the end of this module, you’ll understand how to select the most relevant keys for the different genres. Also, traditional music script is no longer key to modern music and how to create a chord.
Kick Drums
For this module, we’ll look at the importance of kicks and how they’re edited/designed.
Kicks are part of the foundation of your track, and you will learn how to design and identify a suitable kick and where it belongs in the record. You will learn how to create your own kick samples.
By the end of this module, you’ll know how to create and design kick drums that the rest of the record will rely on.
Creating a dance groove
For the third module, you’ll learn about Kick and bass interplay & groove to create that all-essential dance groove.
You’ll learn how to compose a bass groove that compliments your kick.
Synthesizers 1
Syntheis is taught over 2 modules.
Firstly you will learn the different forms of synthesis and basic sound design elements. You’ll learn the basics of analogue, wavetable and frequency modulation synthesis, and how to use each of these to design sounds, including the bass.
You will be introduced to creating sounds using frequency modulation, analogue synthesis and wavetable synthesis. You’ll use these skills to design the bass for the previous groove and also in further lessons.
Synthesizers 2
In this module you delve deeper into wavetable and frequency modulation synthesis, and how to use each of these to design sounds.
Snares & Hats
This module uses further synthesis and concentrates on creating and programming the additional percussion. You’ll further develop your drum skills by programming snares, hi-hats, cymbals and crashes. Using a mix of synthesis, sample manipulation and an overview of some effects and processing we can complete the drums and groove of the record.
At the end of this module you’ll know how to program the percussive elements and how to use a number of effects and processors to make the drums punchy and lively, alongside making the low end of the record gel together.
Processing Theory
Examine processing, compression, effects and bus processing
Working with vocals
Vocals add that human touch to a record. Adding vocals is not a case of just dropping them onto a record. Learn about the way vocals are used to connect the listener to the record. How to affect them, and where to place them.
Arrangement
Arrangement is a critical stage, it stops you from looping the same 16 bars endlessly.
With the basic idea of the track laid out, this module examines how to arrange the loop into a full record. Arrangement brings all your elements together to produce a record.
Arrangement Effects
We examine techniques such as automation, recapitulation and development alongside the use of risers, falls, cymbal crashes and various effects through synthesis, sampling and recording.
By the end of the course you’ll know how to build a track from limited instrumentation, and have a complete record arrangement ready to prepare for mixing and mastering.
